For whom

Pupils, students, scientists, creative artists, enthusiasts, professionals... the Lichtwerkstatt Makerspace is open to everyone who would like to learn and try out new things. The workshops are especially for those who would like to learn more about the technologies, hardware and software of the maker community.

Description

Maker ("makers") are people who make things themselves using the latest technology. The maker movement has links to do-it-yourself and hacker culture with historical roots in the Arts and Crafts Movement. A Makerspace is a physical space with technology and equipment, an open creative workshop. The Light workshop Makerspace at the Abbe Center of Photonics in Jena is Germany's first and so far only Photonics Makerspace. We offer a wide range of low-tech and high-tech equipment for free use by all creative people and maker enthusiasts who want to implement their own ideas and try out new things.

In addition to open access for trained users, we offer regular workshops on current technologies. The offer ranges from 3D printing, laser cutting, embroidery machines and CNC milling machines, digital music and video to various programming languages and game programming. All workshops that work with the tools of the Makerspace Lichtwerkstatt focus on both the digital creation of the design and its implementation on the device.

The workshops are held flexibly in German or English and are sometimes hybrid. Since 2017, over 100 workshops have been offered and held in the Lichtwerkstatt Makerspace by a wide range of speakers from science and industry.
